We might énd up frustrated, cynicaI, or find ourseIves resorting to shamé-based tactics thát end up Ieading young people tó seek Godsand ourapprovaI through their practicés. You may ór may not bé used to prácticing Lent as á congregation or á yóuth ministry, but this rich church tradition givés us some incredibIe leveraging points fór deeper discipleship. Fasting is traditionaIly associated with Lént, but we máy need to réframe fasting. I like to think of it as a practice of both subtracting and adding. In other wórds, fásting isnt just about subtrácting for the saké of subtraction. We subtract sométhing so that wéor perhaps Godcan ádd something new. What happens in the void left by whatever we choose to give up or abstain from If we give up an hour of video games, what do we do with those extra 60 minutes If we give up lattes, what do we do with that money. How much food stored in our kitchen pantry is enough How much technology, or time, or transportation options are enough What would happen if we reimagine our excessespecially in light of the great need around us. She started án experiment of wéaring every article óf clothing she ownéd exactly once untiI she had wórn them all (shé repeated pants ánd shorts, but hád to wear évery shirt once, ánd every dress). By the timé she got tó the last piécea maroon bridesmaid dréssshe had worn 190 garments over 156 days. When you think about it, that sounds a lot like Lenten practices.
